Abstract Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections in clinical practice both in community and hospital settings. The diagnostic methods of UTI have changed little in the past few decades. Culture remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of UTI. However, it takes 24-48 hours to complete. Rapid screening methods like wet mount examination, Gram’s stain, urine dipstick (leukocyte esterase or nitrite), catalase test are used with varying success. Different laboratories use varying procedures for screening and rapid diagnosis of UTI.
