Abstract

Disasters are very bad accidents, causing great damage to properties and human lives along with the live stocks. Despite man’s pride of having tamed the unpredictable forces of nature to his advantage, it is the same helpless man who proves a pigmy before the pounding power of nature. Disasters are caused mainly by the nature’s powerful and destructive forces but some are also caused by man’s callous attitude, misbehavior and unscientific exploration of natural resources. The common disasters areearthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, cyclones, drought etc. Disaster Management or Emergency Management is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks. It is a discipline that involves preparing for disaster before it occurs. Effective ‘disaster management’ relies on thorough integration of emergency plans at all levels of Governmental and Non-Governmental involvement. Information Management is not a product, but a strategy or approach. It is observed that advancement in Information Technology in form of Internet, GIS, Remote Sensing, and Satellite Communication etc. helps a great deal in planning and implementation of hazard reduction measures.
