Sibling Motivational Card - A New Initiative for Early Diagnosis in Pediatric Ocular Defects

Abstract

 A pilot study to find out occurrence of ocular defects among siblings of children with ocular defects by giving a sibling motivational card (SMC). Materials and methods: At an Ophthalmic tertiary care set up of South India, over a period of 5 months, patients of pediatric age group with ocular defects like refractive error, amblyopia, squint and cataract, who had siblings, the parents were given a SMC to evaluate their other children who were not having any apparent complaints.Results: Out of 177 SMC given, 69 siblings (39%) turned up for evaluation and of which 37 (46.4%) had ocular defects. Conclusion: Giving SMC is a newer innovation to persuade the parents to evaluate their other children with no apparent complaints to find out the ocular morbidity at the earliest and to treat them accordingly to prevent future complications.
